I went to McDonald’s recently and witnessed a rather amusing incident. This particular establishment is like any other McCrotches, except that this one has talking garbage bins. When you push open the small door on the garbage bin to empty your tray, the door is hydraulic and fully opens after you push on it. So all you have to do is really touch it and it will swing open. When it opens, it says “thank you” in a mechanical voice.
So I was sitting there about 10 feet away from this thing eating my lunch, and I saw several people dutifully emptying their garbage and receiving recognition from the garbage bin. Then this 9 year old kid saunters up with his tray, and pushes the door open. The garbage can says “thank you”. The kid stares at it for a second, then stoops over and looks inside the garbage can. I can see that he is a bit perplexed, trying to figure out what just transpired. Then, while still stooping over, he slightly leans toward the garbage can and says “you’re welcome” into the yawning opening.
At first I thought he was just entertaining himself. But when the door closed and there was no retort from the unit, he straightened up, shrugged his shoulders and went back to his table where his parents were still sitting.
Might be a good idea to put this youngster back a couple of grades, along with that kid that can’t stop eating paste.

I wonder who the rocket-scientist middle manager was who thought a chatty dumpster was a good idea?
Probably a big Oscar the Grouch fan 🙂
